Job Description
Are you looking for a challenging role in web application development? Do you want to contribute to the revolution in biomedicine? The Molecular Interactions Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is looking for an experienced full-stack developer specialized in front-end technologies to help us build and design the new face and structure of the IntAct database (https://www.ebi.ac.uk/intact), a key resource providing molecular interactions data for the scientific community. Our team works in a highly collaborative international environment and takes a leading role in the development of standards and tools for the representation of complex graphs and networks of biological interactions, which underpin all processes in a living being.

The post holder will work in a global, team-oriented environment and collaborative closely with developers, bioinformaticians and scientists across EMBL-EBI and with external partners both in the UK and internationally.

EMBL-EBI is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI provides freely available data from life science experiments, performs basic research in computational biology and offers an extensive user training programme, supporting researchers in academic and industry.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Take full ownership of various product components, driving both innovation and performance on the technology front
  • Ensure all products are built to an appropriate level of quality for the stage (alpha/beta/production)
  • Deliver products using the appropriate agile project management methodology, learning & iterating frequently
  • Work with the Product Manager to define the roadmap for any given product and translate this into user stories.

Qualifications and Experience
You should have a degree in computer science, bioinformatics, or computational biology, in addition to 2 or more years of experience in Java software development, ideally in a life science environment with a strong focus on web services.
 
You will work in a highly international, team-oriented environment and collaborate closely with developers, bioinformaticians, and scientists across EMBL-EBI and with external partners. Excellent communication skills are required.
 
The following technical skills are a requirement of the role:
  • Profound knowledge working with UI frameworks like Angular or React JS.
  • Knowledge of responsive front-end frameworks like Bootstrap or Foundation.
  • Experience of building single page applications in the browser.
  • Hands-on experience integrating Web applications with REST services.
  • Knowledge of unit testing and test automation tools and techniques for browser based user interfaces.
  • Design, implement and maintain web APIs.
  • Basic usage of Linux / Bash / Powershell.
  • Experience developing with JavaScript. Prior experience with TypeScript is a plus.
  • Experience developing with Java and Spring Framework.
  • Experience with both relational (e.g. Oracle) and non-relational databases (e.g. neo4j).

The ideal candidate will additionally have experience of:

  • Handling of Apache Maven, Git and Intellij or other IDE.
  • API tooling (Swagger/OpenAPI).
  • JavaScript visualization components like D3.js.
  • Configuration and development with Apache Solr and/or ElasticSearch.
  • Bioinformatics Background.
