Job Description
The Ensembl project and the Genomics Technology Infrastructure team seeks a highly motivated developer committed to the development our web infrastructure at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), which is located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

Big data management and dissemination is one of the most important biological information problems in genomics. Ensembl and Ensembl Genomes provides access to over 30,000 genomes served from one of the world's largest computer resources for genomic analysis developing open source software. Thousands of scientists worldwide depend on access to these data to help their research on a daily basis. We are looking for a candidate to drive forward our move to container based deployment of Ensembl’s web infrastructure.

As part of the Ensembl Containerised Deployment project you will report to the Ensembl Web Back-End project leader and work as part of a team of developers with responsibilities including:
  • Developing the new Ensembl deployment platform in conjunction with the Ensembl and Ensembl Genomes teams
  • Continuous evaluation of the current state of container technology
  • Developing prototype container based deployment and then rolling this out to more complex use-cases
  • Providing web support for other EMBL-EBI projects mainly based on Ensembl technology or data
  • Helping to maintain the public services delivered by the two projects both in the UK and on our AWS mirrors
  • Helping to ensure the regular scheduled releases of Ensembl and Ensembl Genomes are delivered on-time in conjunction with our front-end development team
  • Collaborate with EMBL-EBI’s technical services cluster to ensure our container solutions are in-line with EMBL-EBI directions

At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of ‘big data’ in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 23 member states and two associate member states and proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 600 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world.

Knowledge of Unix/Linux command line, Git is essential. Knowledge of deployment tools such as Ansible, Chef or Puppet would be advantageous.
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme and health insurance, educational and other family related benefits where applicable, as well as financial support for relocation and installation.
